•Flower House Exhibits
Now is the time to begin preparing exhibits and entries in the various fair contests.
One of the most pleasant buildings for those with green thumbs and those who wish they did is the Flower House. It is one of the newer buildings on the fairgrounds but its rustic facade and shady front porch make it a welcome spot for fair goers.
Committee chair Minnie Posey and co-chairman Dana Truxillo, along with the Washington Parish Garden Club Council work tirelessly to encourage the display of the very best in flowers and greenery that Washington Parish has to offer. These exhibits may be awarded a blue, red, or white ribbon and some of the more impressive receive a purple "Best of Show" along with a small premium award.
There are categories for just about any flower or potted plant one can think off, and the committee loves plant entries that are healthy and possibly blooming. There are also categories for flower arrangements that include only flowers grown in Washington Parish as well as dried arrangements and those with purchased flowers.
Children may enter as well.
These arrangements must follow one of the following assigned themes: Age 2-Kindergarten "Highway Treasure" or "Look What I Found in the Woods;" Grades 1-2 "Daddy Took me Fishing" or "Traveling by Buggy;" Grades 3-4 "Grandma Taught Me This" or "The Circus Came to Town;" Grades 5-6 "Down by the Creek" or "I Love Bible School;" Grades 7-8 "Roadside Beauties" or "Working in the Garden;" Grades 9-10 "Dancing Flowers" or "Remembering My Little Red Wagon;" and Grades 11-12 "Daddy Taught me to Drive" or "Outhouse on the Farm."
By encouraging children to enter, the committee hopes to nurture a lifelong love of plants and flowers.
Entries are accepted on Sunday from 2:00-4:00; Monday 8:00 - 3:30 and Tuesday 8:00-10:00. Judging by Louisiana Garden Club Federation certified judges begins promptly at 1:00 on Tuesday.
In addition to showcasing Washington Parish residents, the flower exhibit also shows off the amazing talents of the seven Washington Parish Garden Clubs and daily demonstrations are conducted in the Posey Room.
More information about entering your plants and flowers can be found on the freefair.com website, Facebook or or in a fair catalog. One firm rule, however, is that all plants and flowers must be in the hands of the exhibitor at least eight weeks prior to the fair.

•Washington Parish’s Got Talent
The 2019 Fair Queen's contest will be on Saturday at 3:00 pm on the main stage. With the queen's contest moving to a new timeslot, the stage committee has come up with a unique way to celebrate the opening night of the fair. The first annual Washington Parish's Got Talent will be held on Tuesday night on the main stage. While Washington Parish residents know there is talent all around, this will be an opportunity to showcase it and crown a winner. Potential contestants are Kindergarten through 12th graders who asked to video their talent and submit it to email@example.com. The talent must be tasteful, safe to do on or near the stage, and pre-approved by the stage committee. All entries will be judged and the top performers will be invited to compete on the stage on Tuesday evening.
