FHS Demons defeat previously undefeated Belle Chasse

By DAMON SMITH,

The Franklinton Demons football team won a huge game last Friday in Demon Stadium over previously undefeated Belle Chasse, 23-17.
The win moves the Demons record to 4-2 on the season, as they have won their last three consecutive games. The Demons will have a big test this week when the 5-1 St Charles Catholic Comets come to Franklinton to play on Thursday night.
The Demons got off to a great start as they recovered a short kickoff to give themselves possession in Cardinal territory at the 35. From there the Demons ran three plays and Mike Martin scored from a yard out at the 11:04 mark to go up 7-0 after Keaton Catrett added the extra point.
Belle Chasse answered with a 58 yard drive to tie the game on a five yard run at the 7:38 point of the first.
After a long lighting delay the game was resumed and the teams traded possessions before the Demons attempted a 31 yard field goal in the second quarter. The kick was blocked and returned for a touchdown by Belle Chasse to give them the lead at 14-7.
The Demons fumbled on the next possession and the Cardinal returned the ball to the Demons 18. The Demons defense kept them out of the endzone though, and the Demons went into halftime trailing 14-7.
The two teams traded punts to open the third period before the Demons scored on a 69 yard drive when Mike Martin went in from seven yards out with :53 left in the period. Coach Barber elected to go for the two point conversion and Martin ran that in as well to give the Demons a 15-14 lead.
Belle Chasse turned the ball over on downs at their own 46 on their next drive as they were unsuccessful on a fourth down. The Demons scored after taking possession when Martin went in from a yard out with 7:54 to put the Demons up 23-14 after another successful two point conversion.
Belle Chasse added a field goal at the 3:24 mark to cut the lead to 23-17 but they were unable to get the ball back as the Demons ran the time out to preserve the win.

Franklinton Coach Jonathon Barber said it was a huge win for the Demons. "It was a big win for us. Our kids battled through adversity for much of the game, and we were finally able to take control midway through the fourth."
He also said the offense and defense fought hard all night. "I felt like what we did in the first half was good. We had a few run throughs and some turnovers, but once we were able to clean that up, we began to play much better. I thought our defense was outstanding all night and offensively we took it to them late in the game. It was good to see our kids battle through some adversity and come out with a win against a quality opponent."
Mike Martin lead the Demons statistically with 165 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries. Jasper Lasalle rushed for 52 yards on 6 carries and passed for 112 completing 6 of 18 passes with an interception. Quaran Warren ran 7 times for 23 yards. Kadarious Mark was the leading receiver with 3 receptions for 63 yards, Caleb Brown had 2 for 44 and Cornelius Laurant had 1 for 5 yards.
•Don’t forget: The Demons will host St. Charles Catholic on Thursday night this week.
