FHS Demons fall to Bogalusa for first time since 2000

By DAMON SMITH,

The Franklinton Demons football team was defeated last Friday by the Bogalusa Lumberjacks, 35-30.

The Demons overcame a 29-8 deficit to pull ahead 30-29 late in the game only to have the Lumberjacks score with thirty seconds left on the clock to defeat the Demons for the first time since the year 2000. The Demons record falls to 1-2 on the early season with a road game coming up at Tylertown this week.

The Lumberjacks had the ball first and scored on that drive with a four yard run by their speedy quarterback with 7:17 left in the first quarter. The extra point was no good and the Demons trailed 6-0.

The Demons drove to the Jacks 10 but bogged down there and turned the ball over on downs. The Jacks drove 90 yards to score as Taylor passed to Tyrese Rousell for an eight yard touchdown with 11:53 left in the second quarter. Their two point conversion was good and the Lumberjacks led 14-0.

The Demons punted but got a break when the Jacks fumbled at their 9 yard line. Mike Martin scored from two yards out and added the two point conversion to cut the lead to 14-8 with 3:15 left in the second quarter.
The Jacks managed a 25 yard field goal at the end of the first half for a 17-8 halftime score.

In the second half the Demons fumbled over to the Jacks on the second play of the drive, giving them the ball at the 33 yard line. The Jacks took advantage and score on a one yard run for a 23-8 score after the extra point was no good.

The Demons then turned the ball over at their own 33 yard line on downs and again the Jacks took advantage as they scored on a 33 yard pass on the first play. The two point conversion was no good and the score stood at 29-8.

But the Demons offense got on track after that and put together a nice drive that ended with Martin scoring on a four yard run to cut the lead to 29-15 with 3:53 left in the third.

The Demons defense got in on the action too, as Avant Monnie picked off a Lumberjack pass and returned it for a touchdown to make the score 29-23 after the two point conversion was successful. The Demons Monnie again intercepted a pass on the Jacks next drive but the Demons punted. The Jacks were forced to turn the ball over on downs at the Demons 42 with 5:52 left in the game and the Demons offense began marching.

The drive ended when quarterback Jasper Lasalle faked the handoff and went around the left end himself for the four yard touchdown run to tie the game. Keaton Catrett added the extra point and the Demons were ahead 30-29.
The Jacks then drove to the Demons ten yard line where Taylor found Roussell at the one yard line before Roussell reached in for the score and the Lumberjack lead with thirty seconds left. The two point conversion attempt was no good and the Jacks led 35-30.

The Demons managed to move to just over midfield but a last play attempt into the endzone was incomplete as time ran out.

Franklinton Coach Jonathon Barber said after the game that there was a lot that could have gone better for the Demons.

"We didn't start the game the way we had hoped to. We were lacking a little focus on offense and we didn't have any intensity on the defensive side of the ball. We were able to make some adjustments defensively in the third quarter and began to get some stops and created some turnovers. I was proud of the way our guys fought back after facing such a big deficit. I have to do a better job at the end of the game in being able to close out the opponent."

Coach Barber also feels that there are always things to learn from hard losses. "Our guys are hurt, but the good news is we get to play again next week. We have to be able to overcome adversity, get up off the mat and come out fighting."

Demons quarterback Jasper Lasalle passed for 179 yards on 16 completions of 25 attempts while rushing for 31 yards and a touchdown. Mike Martin rushed for 57 yards and 2 touchdowns on 13 carries while Quaran Warren rushed for 49 on 5 carries. Warren also caught 2 passes for 17 yards, Caleb Brown caught 5 for 60, Javan Hart caught 2 for 14, Kadarious Mark was the leading receiver with 76 yards on 4 receptions and Spencer Lambert had one catch for 9 yards.

The Demons will travel north to play the 3-2 Tylertown Chiefs this Friday. The Demons defeated the Chiefs last season 21-14.
