Funeral home owner Brisco Crain dies at 88

Longtime Franklinton funeral home owner Brisco H. Crain passed away last Tuesday at his Franklinton residence. He was 88.

Crain was the owner of Crain and Sons Funeral Home. He also had other Franklinton business interests, including the former Crain’s Quality Cleaners. Crain was also the owner of Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Bogalusa.

Born in Franklinton, Crain graduated from the former Washington Parish Training School, where he was a member of the last class allowed to graduate after the 11th grade. He then went to Benedict College in South Carolina where he received his BA in social studies. Crain was also a veteran, having served in the Korean War.

Crain started out as a schoolteacher in the Washington Parish School System. He then became an insurance agent and eventually went to work for Tucker’s Mortury Services, beginning a career in the funeral home business that would continue for the rest of his life. He purchased Crain and Sons Funeral Homes in Kentwood and Franklinton. Later he bought Tucker’s Mortury in Bogalusa and converted it to Crain and Sons of Bogalusa.

He is survived by his children, including a daughter, Patrice Crain, who is a Franklinton alderwoman. His other daughter is Ayisesha Magee, also of Franklinton. Surviving sons are Rodderick Monroe of Baton Rouge and David Land of South Carolina.
