Lady Demons look to next season

The Franklinton High School Lady Demons lost to Beau Chene Saturday evening, one step away from the state Class 4A softball tournament. With the loss, the team closes out a 22-8 season and first place in District 8-4A. At Beau Chene Saturday evening, Beau Chene got on the board at the bottom of the first when Marcantel walked, Dupuis grounded out advancing the runner, Ballard doubled, and Marcantel scored. With two outs and two strikes it looked like the Lady Demons would send the game into extra innings when Dubuis singled on a line drive and drove in the go ahead run to win the game. Spears 2-4 (2B) RBI Ard 1-4 RBI, 1R Albanie Fussell 2-3 2RBI Fowler 1R Aleigha Fussell took the loss for the Lady Demons. She lasted six and 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out three and walking one. The starting nine will return next season with the exception of Senior Bailey Spears. Head Coach Leslie McGee’s team looks to make a great run next year with a highly experienced team. Last year’s team was the first team in school history to win a playoff game and so advancing this season to the quarterfinals was quite an accomplishment for such a young team. The team finished the season with a 22-8 record and 1st place in District 8-4A. Of note, the team had to overcome some physical challenges as starting third basemen Missouri Varnado and center fielder Bailey Spears had just returned from shoulder surgery. The starting left fielder Ashlyn Welch was returning after rehabilitation of a torn PCL that required surgery in the spring. The Lady Demons would like to thank all the fans that supported them throughout the season.
