Memorial Day Remembrance In Franklinton

Sunday afternoon, the solemn notes of Taps and a stirring 21-gun salute paid tribute to the memory of those who have lost their lives in the service of their country.

In a ceremony held on Cleveland Street in front of the Varnado Store Museum, Franklinton residents and those from surrounding areas remembered our war dead.

In the background, just up Cleveland Street from the museum, stood a granite memorial inscribed with the names of those from Washington Parish who made the ultimate sacrifice.... average citizens who stepped forward in time of war to serve their country.

The American Legion Post 24 color guard snapped with precision at Sunday's ceremony. The post's buglar held his notes perfectly as the small crowd gathered for the cermony quietly watched and listened.

Memorial Days may come and go, but in Washington Parish, we always remember.
