Parish president urges preparation as hurricane season starts
The 2020 hurricane season started on Monday of this week, and Washington Parish President Richard N. Thomas is urging parish residents to think ahead.
Thomas said, “The National Hurricane Center is predicting a 60% chance of an above normal hurricane season.”
He said the NHC outlook calls for six to ten hurricanes, with three to six of those being major.
“Wind makes the headlines,” Thomas remarked, “but nearly 90% of all deaths associated with hurricanes are from storm surge and inland flooding.”
“If you see water across the road, turn around, don’t drown.”
Thomas is asking all Washington Parish residents to prepare a 7-day disaster kit that should include, at the least:
•Personal hygiene items
•First aid kit
•Flashlight and extra batteries
•Fuel for generator if needed
He noted that a more complete disaster list can be found online at getagameplan.org
Thomas also pointed out that the 2020 hurricane season will be complicated by the COVID-19 situation.
“Shelters might have reduced capacity because of social distancing,” he said. “Everyone needs to stay vigilant and be prepared.”of the novel coronavirus.
