Washington Parish changes the school starting date

The starting date for Washington Parish schools has been pushed back from the original August 7 date.

The school board decided Thursday evening that schools will now start on Monday, August 17. Teachers will report on August 10.

If Louisiana is still in Phase 2 as of August 17, then students will follow the hybrid plan previously announced: Half of the students will attend class on Mondays and Wednesdays; and half will attend class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fridays will be reserved for deep cleaning of all schools as well as teacher prep. On the days that students are not in school, they will still participate in virtual learning via the internet.

Facemasks will be required of all students in grade 3 and up. Masks must be solid color and will be worn to “the greatest extent possible,” said Frances Varnado, superintendent of Washington Parish Schools.

If Louisiana moves into Phase 3 as of August 17, the Washington Parish School System will announce the actual plan that will be followed.
