“Bring it,” was the message Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss had to Rebels fans as LSU and Lane Kiffin are set to return to Oxford on Saturday.
Kiffin was at the helm of Ole Miss football for six seasons, where he turned a middle of the pack SEC team, into a College Football Playoff contender. He coached first round draft picks players Jaxon Dart and Walter Nolan during his time in Oxford, and helped lead the rebels to an 11-1 season last year.
After some massive leadership changes in the SEC last year, with LSU, Florida, and Auburn all firing their head coaches, Kiffin gained a lot of attention in the coaching carousel. As the 2025 season waned on, Kiffin did not sign an extension with Ole Miss and Rebel fans started to become concerned the highly touted head coach was considering different options.
Two days after the Rebels 38-19 victory over Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl, Kiffin announced that he would be accepting the head coaching position at LSU after months of speculation. Immediately after this Athletic Director Keith Carter told Kiffin that he would not be allowed to coach the Rebels through the playoffs, and that defensive coordinator Pete Golding would take over as the head coach.
This message was not well received from Rebel fans, as feelings of betrayal swept through Oxford. Concern also began to grow as Ole Miss entered the Playoffs as serious contenders to win it all, and now without the head coach that got them there, things seemed dire.
Ole Miss was able to make an impressive run in the Playoffs despite the drama, dismantling Tulane in the first round 41-10, and beating SEC champion Georgia 39-34 in the Sugar Bowl. The Rebels came up just short in the Semi-Finals losing to Miami 31-27, but optimism grew that Ole Miss could be a contender with or without Kiffin.
The offseason also brought drama between Kiffin and Ole Miss, as LSU snagged four players from Ole Miss in the Transfer portal. The Rebels were able to hang on to star-talents Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy however, setting Ole Miss up for another great season.
Two hundred eighty-eight days later, the stage will be set in the college football world, as all eyes turn towards Oxford for one of the biggest games of the year.
The Rebels have looked strong to open the season, edging Louisville 41‑38 in a barn‑burner at the Music City Kickoff in Nashville and then taking care of business last week with a 41‑9 win over Charlotte.
Kiffin's Tigers have also been sharp, dismantling Clemson in Death Valley 51-10 to start the season, and taking care of Louisiana Tech 45-14 last week.
Ole Miss comes into the matchup ranked eight in this week's AP Poll with LSU coming in seven – a top ten matchup in the Vaught.
