Bogue Chitto State Park, located south of Franklinton, will soon be increased in size by more than 800 acres.
The park is currently 1,786 acres and with the expansion it will be 2,594 acres, which is a 45 percent increase.
The Office of Louisiana State Parks partnered with the Trust for Public Land to obtain the new property.
The property was purchased from Weyerhauser. The expansion is located to the west of the current park acreage, the area between the park’s western boundry and Highway 25.
Preliminary plans for the expanded portion of Bogue Chitto State Park include additional equestrian trails, mountain bike trails, and hiking trails.
“We are extremely grateful for our partnership with Trust for Public Land. They were instrumental in assisting the Office of State Parks in securing this land to preserve it for outdoor recreation so it can be enjoyed by all visitors to the park,” said Louisiana Lt/ Gov. Billy Nungesser.“
State Sen. Beth Mizell of Franklinton has been a dominent advocate of Bogue Chitto State Park in the Legislature.
She commented, "The land expansion at Bogue Chitto State Park will add to its success and give us more of this great park to love.”
“This is such an exciting addition to the park,” she added.
“Bogue Chitto State Park is getting attention around the country and could and should be a great economic boost to our area,” Sen. Mizell noted. “This property addition will build on that success.”
