The Bowling Green Buccaneers traveled to the coast and returned home victorious, earning both their first season and district win with a dominant 54-14 victory over the Christian Collegiate Academy Bulldogs.
The Buccaneers opened the game with an impressive kickoff return by Trent Penton. Though the ball came loose, teammate Alex Brock quickly recovered it, setting up a fast offensive drive. Quarterback Kerston Diddon connected with Ryn Rivenbark for the first touchdown of the night, and Brock's extra point made it 7-0.
The Buccaneer defense held firm on the Bulldogs' opening drive, forcing a punt. On Bowling Green's next possession, strong rushing from Kolt Killingsworth, Rivenbark, and Cole Cooper pushed the ball downfield, allowing senior Jesse Gaines to cap the drive with a touchdown. The PAT was no good, giving the Bucs a 13-0 lead.
On the Bulldogs' next series, a hard hit by Masyn Lumpkin jarred the ball loose, and Marcus Barnett recovered the fumble. Diddon then found Killingsworth wide open for another touchdown, and Brock's kick extended the lead to 20-0.
The Buccaneer defense continued to dominate as Kaleb Anthony came up with another fumble recovery, leading to Diddon scoring on a keeper. Brock's PAT made it 27-0. On the next Bulldog kickoff return, Rivenbark scored again after a defensive collision forced the ball loose, allowing him to scoop it up and take it to the end zone. Brock's PAT was good, giving Bowling Green a commanding 34-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, the Bulldogs were again forced to punt, and with the lead secure, the Buccaneers began rotating in players. Freshman quarterback Kade McDaniel took over under center and led the team with confidence. Nick Schilling added a touchdown run before halftime, and Brock's kick pushed the score to 41-0.
Coach Dean King praised his team's perseverance, saying, "I am proud of this group. They have been through so much adversity and trials this season, but they have never quit or given up. They have continued to play and work hard, and it paid off tonight with a win-and a district win."
The second half was played with a running clock, giving all Buccaneers the opportunity to take the field. The Bulldogs managed to score a touchdown, but their two-point conversion attempt was stopped, bringing the score to 41-6. Senior Trindon Young then turned on the speed for a touchdown run, though the PAT was no good, extending the lead to 47-6.
The Bulldogs added another touchdown late in the game and were successful on the two-point conversion, narrowing the score to 47-14. The final series of plays saw multiple end zone efforts by Trent Penton, including a kickoff return and a 20-yard run. After two called-back attempts, Penton was finally awarded the touchdown on his third reach across the goal line. Brock's PAT was good, sealing the 54-14 victory.
Coach Dean King commended both his players and coaching staff, saying, "I am proud of my players and coaches tonight. I cannot thank my coaches enough for their continued hard work and dedication to these young men. Again, I am just so proud of our team and the Buccaneer Nation."
