It's been a grueling season for the Bowling Green Buccaneers, who now stand at 0-7 after running through what fans have nicknamed "Murderer's Row" - the 2025 schedule.
The Bucs have faced one powerhouse after another, with over six starters either sidelined or playing limited minutes due to crushing injuries. With their backs against the wall, Bowling Green continues to fight through adversity, hoping for a turning point as district play begins.
Homecoming 2025 showed another defeat against the Centreville Academy Tigers. The Tigers' rushing and passing game nailed the game 42-14, with the Bucs held to minimal yardage throughout all four quarters.
The Buccaneers were forced to punt after their first drive, as the kickoff was halted by the Tiger defense. The Tigers started strong with a quick score and a two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. The Buccaneers were forced to punt again, and Centreville added another touchdown, with the two-point conversion failing for a 14-0 advantage. On Bowling Green's third possession, a Tiger interception set up another score, though the conversion attempt was stopped, making it 20-0. After a Buccaneer punt and a Tiger turnover on downs, the Bucs were again forced to punt, leading to another Tiger touchdown and successful two-point conversion for a 28-0 halftime lead.
Opening the second half, the Tigers scored again to make it 36-0. Finally, quarterback Kerston Diddon found Keelan Jackson for a touchdown pass, with Alex Brock's PAT good to close the third quarter at 36-7. Centreville responded with a touchdown pass of their own to extend the lead to 42-7. The Buccaneers answered late when Diddon connected with Kolt Killingworth for a touchdown, and Brock's PAT brought the final score to 42-14.
Despite the loss, Bowling Green's offensive and defensive lines continued to battle hard. Masyn Lumpkin, Cash Kinlaw, Layton Walters, Noah Wall, Paxton Brumfield, and Braisyn O'Bryant, anchored the offensive and defensive fronts, showing grit and determination against a dominant Tiger football team.
The Buccaneers are treating injured players and grasping at glimpses of new hope in district play. Key injured players who are vital to the team include seniors Rhett Schilling and Jesse Gaines; juniors Nathan Pylant, Beau Brown, Braisyn O'Bryant, and Landon Boyd; and sophomore Nick Schilling.
Coach Dean King commented after the game, "Tough loss against a top program in Centreville Academy. We fought hard and we just must keep playing hard and sticking to the course. Good is fixing to come, and that's what we keep believing and keep working for."
Bowling Green will travel to Gulfport this week to face Christian Collegiate Academy in their first MAIS District 3A-4 matchup, hopeful that this marks the beginning of a long-awaited turnaround.
