The Bowling Green Buccaneers endured a long, winding ride through the backwoods of Mississippi to reach Madden on Friday night, where they faced the Leake Academy Rebels, last year's MAIS Class 5A State Runner-up.
Early in the game the Buccaneers looked ready to compete, even taking an early lead, but the Rebels' firepower eventually overwhelmed them in a 42-3 defeat. The loss drops Bowling Green to 0-6 in the season with only four games remaining that are all district action.
After an opening-drive interception, Keelan Jackson gave the Bucs life with a defensive takeaway that set up their second possession. Quarterback Kerston Diddon guided the offense downfield, and Ryn Rivenbark punched into the end zone - only for a penalty to erase the score. The drive ended in points, however, as kicker Alex Brock delivered a 29-yard field goal to put Bowling Green ahead 3-0.
The first quarter closed with the Buccaneers holding the lead, but momentum quickly shifted. Leake's star quarterback, George Wilcox - Mississippi's top-ranked passer who tallied more than 3,600 yards and 41 touchdowns a year ago - found his rhythm and led the Rebels on a scoring drive early in the second quarter to take a 7-3 advantage. From that point, the Rebels took full control.
Turnovers, a costly kickoff fumble, and defensive breakdowns allowed Leake to score on every possession until halftime, when substitutions slowed the pace. Another standout for the Rebels was Garrett Adcock, a strong returning starter who continued to showcase his abilities throughout the night. By the final whistle, the Rebels' dominance was clear, and the Buccaneers were left searching for answers.
Coach Dean King commented, "We played with momentum in that first quarter and dominated some key plays. But against a team like Leake, we just couldn't match up four quarters. District play is where it really counts, and that's where our focus is now."
Bowling Green will host Centreville Academy for Homecoming. Homecoming presentations will begin at 6:00 p.m., followed by kickoff at 7:00 p.m. at Buck Hellen Stadium.
