The Bowling Green Buccaneers closed out their regular season Friday night with a hard-fought loss to Wayne Academy, finishing the year 1-9 overall and 1-2 in district play.
But in true MAIS fashion, the postseason picture turned into pure power point pandemonium. Despite their win, Wayne Academy somehow slid to the #10 seed, while Bowling Green-with just one victory-dropped into the #9 spot. That bizarre twist of numbers now sends the Buccaneers on an arduous road trip to Tennessee to take on the #8-seeded Rossville Christian Academy in the MAIS Division II quarterfinals. Rossville is located east of Memphis, approximately 350 miles from Franklinton.
It's been a wild season of grit, growth, and gridiron madness - and it's not over yet. Buccaneer fans, grab your jackets and your GPS - it's time to buckle up and hit the road north. Tennessee, here come the Bucs!

Buccaneers Battle Through
Injuries in Wayne Academy Loss
The Buccaneers received the opening kickoff but were forced to punt after their first series. On Wayne Academy's very first offensive play, the Jaguars broke loose for a long touchdown run, taking a quick 7-0 lead.
Senior Jesse Gaines gave the Buccaneers a spark with a strong kickoff return to the Jaguar 49-yard line. Unfortunately, the run ended with an injury that took Gaines out of the game. Bowling Green's drive stalled on fourth down, turning the ball over to Wayne. The Buccaneer defense answered the challenge, forcing a punt on the next series. Both teams traded punts again, closing out a defensive first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, the Jaguars fumbled, setting up Bowling Green's first touchdown of the night. Nick Schilling punched it in for six, but a high snap on the PAT left the score at 6-7. Wayne responded quickly with another scoring drive to make it 6-14, and after a Buccaneer fumble, the Jaguars capitalized again before halftime to lead 6-21.
Bowling Green opened the second half with an onside kick that was just short of a recovery. Wayne extended its lead to 6-27 before the Buccaneers put together another game highlight. Senior Trent Penton came up big with an interception, returning the ball to set up the offense. After a solid run by Keelan Jackson, Penton connected on a pass from Quarterback Kerston Diddon for a Buccaneer touchdown. Jackson followed with a successful two-point conversion, cutting the deficit to 14-27.
Another onside attempt by Bowling Green fell short, giving the Jaguars great field position and another score for a 14-34 lead. From there, the Bucs-already battered and short-handed-struggled to keep momentum. A series of hard hits and mounting injuries left the team fighting simply to stay on the field.
Wayne Academy added two more touchdowns in the closing minutes, both with blocked PAT attempts, sealing the game at 14-46.
Coach Dean King, "This group has been through so much adversity this year. We are down several starters with injuries. We always talk about sticking together and never quitting. These young men get another chance to play the game in the playoffs. We face a team who plays hard and will be on the road. These guys continue to play hard and show no quit. That says a lot about this team. I am glad to see them get another shot in the playoffs!"
Leading the team defensively were Nick Schilling and Landon Boyd each with 8 tackles, and Trent Penton with an interception.
Despite the loss, the Buccaneers battled through adversity and showed heart to the final whistle. And in a twist that only the MAIS power point system could create, that fight was enough to keep Bowling Green alive in postseason play. The Bucs may be bruised, but they're bound for Tennessee to battle #8 seed Rossville Christian - ready to reload and prove that this wild season still has one more chapter to write.

Buccaneer Seniors Honored
Prior to kickoff, Bowling Green honored its senior Buccaneers, each of whom has played a vital role in the team's grit and spirit throughout the season.
Trent Penton capped his final regular season game with an interception and touchdown pass, a true leader on both sides of the ball. Alex Brock, the Bucs' standout kicker, saw limited kicking opportunities but made his mark on defense with multiple key tackles. Jesse Gaines, a powerful running back, opened the game strong before suffering a major knee injury in the first quarter.
On the line, Masyn Lumpkin battled fiercely in the trenches all night, showing heart and toughness every snap. Rhett Schilling and Trindon Young, both sidelined with prior major injuries, were missed on the field but stood proudly with their teammates for Senior Night recognition.
This senior class has endured one of the most challenging schedules in recent Buccaneer memory, facing adversity with determination and pride. From leadership on the field to resilience off it, these seniors have defined what it means to be a Buccaneer.
