Another grueling loss for the Buccaneers, who were pounded by the Columbia Cougars 48-0, dropping their season record to 1-8, District 1-1.
As confusing as it may seem, the Buccaneers still have a fighting chance --- Division II playoff power points currently have them sitting at the No. 8 seed of 16 teams for the upcoming quarterfinals in two weeks. However, with only one week left in regular play, the standings could easily shuffle once again. In fact, despite Columbia's dominant win, the Cougars slipped from the top seed to No. 3 in the latest rankings.
The Buccaneers came out strong against the Cougars in the first quarter. Columbia's first touchdown came on a long 60-yard run, but the Buccaneer defense showed grit early. Ryn Rivenbark delivered deep punts that pinned the Cougars back at their own 4- and 6-yard lines. Unfortunately, Columbia managed to march the field both times, finding the end zone on each drive to take a 13-0 lead. On their third possession, the Cougars struck again, adding a two-point conversion to extend the score to 21-0. As a matter of record, Columbia scored on every possession of the first half. The Buccaneers were forced to punt several times, and a costly fumble late in the half set up the final Cougar touchdown, sending the teams to halftime with a 35-0 score.
The second half was played under a running clock, but the Cougars managed to add two more touchdowns, sealing the game with a final score of 48-0.
Before the quarterfinals begin, the Buccaneers will host their final regular season game at home for Senior Night at Buck Hellen Stadium, facing off against the No. 9 seed Wayne Academy this week. Despite the challenges of the season, the Buccaneers remain determined to close out their home schedule with heart, pride, and a win in front of their home crowd. Senior Buccaneers to be honored include Alex Brock, Jessie Gaines, Masyn Lumpkin, Trent Penton, Rhett Schilling, and Trindon Young.
Head Coach Dean King said, "It was tough loss, but I believe our guys will come back next week better and stronger for our last game against Wayne. It's a big game for us and it's at home and senior night."
This week's win could move the Buccaneers to the 7th seed. Come out and support the Buccaneers this week. Senior presentation begins at 6, and kickoff for 7 in WE Buck Hellen stadium this Friday, October 31, 2025.
