LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — A Louisiana school board has narrowly chosen the district’s chief academic officer as its next superintendent.
The Calcasieu Parish School Board voted 8-7 Thursday night for Shannon LaFargue, the American Press reported.
The former principal was among three finalists to succeed Superintendent Karl Bruchhaus, who announced in February that he will retire June 30.
LaFargue said he and the board “are trying to be flexible, give teachers real autonomy, give teachers the opportunity to say, ‘I can have fun today in this class.’”
He has been the chief academic officer for the Calcasieu Parish School Board since 2019. He was the board’s chief operating officer from 2015-2019, and a principal from 2007-2014.
The School Board will meet on June 7 to arrange contract negotiations for LaFargue.
