Well, football fans, it's back! We've got a brand new season ahead of us with new beginnings everywhere. Every high school team is undefeated and optimism abounds. I'm just looking forward to being at a game somewhere with the sights, sounds and even the smells of a good high school concession stand filling the night air.
I wish your team all the best this season and may the ball bounce your way!
Game of the Week - ACCS at Bowling Green. ACCS was 12-3 last season and have a solid program, winning the 5A state championship. The Bucs were the 4A state runners up and were 9-4 overall with their worst lost to ACCS in week one. Nothing would make the Buccaneers happier than to start the 2024 season off with a win over the visiting ACCS Rebels.
Both teams made fantastic runs in the playoffs last season. Both teams have a ton of experience while also looking to fill a few holes. It's week one and anything can happen and this game could come down to team depth and conditioning while playing in the early season sweltering heat.
Should be a good one.
Notes and quotes
All of the Tangipahoa Parish football-playing schools that participate in the LHSAA are now classified as "select" under the new definition of the term that was changed since last season. For example, Amite and Sumner, once the regular season is over, will play in either Division II or III when the playoffs begin along with schools like St Thomas Aquinas, Northlake Christian and Pope John Paul who are select schools but not public schools like Amite and Sumner.
"Scrimmage: Had a great effort. Scored two offensive and two defensive touchdowns and held Brookhaven to one score. We had some of the usual first game mistakes that teams always have, the illegal procedures and missed assignment issues, but those things are easily fixed. That is why we play a scrimmage before the season begins. We open the next Friday against the defending 5A state champion Adams Christian. They return a lot of their key players and are well coached. It will be a great test for our guys. We welcome the good competition as we open up our season with three 5A powers. Playing good people gets us ready for our 4A district. We hope the community will come out and support our young men."
---Jason Johnson,
Bowling Green head coach.
"The scrimmage went well; we had four total teams there and we all scrimmaged each other in a ten and ten offense and defense play style. Overall, our guys look ok, we saw what we need to work on."
---Destin Pittman,
Bens Ford head coach.
