•Part 5b - Jeremiah Magee's children
Jeremiah Magee (1801-1865), the fifth child of William and Mary Margaret James Magee, married Linea Davis, the daughter of Zaborn and Ester Bullock Davis, on January 10, 1828. As evidenced by Census records, the couple had seven children, three of whom died as infants. Their four children who survived to adulthood were as follows: Eldridge, Salena, Zaborn Davis, and Hosea Lafayette Magee. My source for this column is the "William Magee and Mary Margaret James and their Descendants 1770-1993" book.
Before proceeding with the listing, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge my dear friend and that of my parents, the late Ellis Carroll Magee, and his mission nearly a decade ago to have his ancestral cemetery markers set at the Magee Cemetery near Enon. He worked to have them placed there for his great-grandfather Jeremiah Magee and his wife Linea Davis Magee and also for his grandfather Zaborn Davis Magee and his two wives, Martha Mizelle Magee and Lenore Wascom Magee. As Mr. Ellis explained, the Veterans Administration supplied (they did at that time - I am uncertain of the current policy) markers for Civil War Veterans - Zaborn and his brothers Eldridge and Hosea.
Eldridge Magee (1829-1891), the firstborn, became a farmer taking over operations from his father Jeremiah. And he served with Co. A, 3rd LA Cavalry, C.S.A. (Confederate States Army). Eldridge married Margaret Ann Roberts. The couple had the following children: Josephus Monroe Magee, who died as a youth at age seven; Linea Amanda Magee, who married Adolphe/Adolphus Gayer; Jeremiah "Miah" Martin Magee, who married Louisa "Ludie" Caroline Bullock; William David Magee, who died at age nineteen; Ida Rosalene Magee, who married Harrison William Bush; Mary Salena Magee, who married Henry Willis Magee; Floreda Corine Magee, who married Isaac Josiah Green; Florence Adaline Magee, who married William "Bill" Pierson Wascom, first, and Robert Elbert Magee, second; John Lafayette "Fatie" Magee (postmaster and mayor of Franklinton), who married Edith Stella Jenkins; Louis Leander Magee, who married Lillie Adams; Lula Leona Magee, who married Lewis E. Green; and Dr. Donies Eldridge Magee, who married Novie Gertrude Pierce.
Salena Magee (1832 - 1910) married Martin Van Buren Morris (1836-1864), first, and Sylvester "Pete" Richardson, second. She married Morris in early 1862 and Richardson around 1869-1870 but definitely before January 10, 1874. By August 5, 1880, Salena was divorced from Sylvester Richardson. According to the "William Magee and Mary Margaret James and their Descendants 1770 - 1993" book, Salena stated in a land deed that she was "grass widow of Sylvester Richardson and surviving widow of Martin Morris." A grass widow was one who lived apart from her husband. With Martin Van Buren Morris, she had Martin Van Buren Morris, Jr., who born in December of 1862 died at age 17 in July of 1880. Salena and husband Sylvester "Pete" Richardson had the following children: Minnie Alice Richardson, who married Joseph Oliver Penton, and Jesse Martin Richardson, who married Nettie Rose Perry. Jesse died in a tragic fall from the Bogue Chitto River bridge (new at the time) on which he was working at Enon.
Zaborn Davis Magee (1842-1918) married Martha J. Mizelle (1843-1863), first, and after her death, Lenore "Nora" Wascom (ca 1852-before May 1910). With Martha Mizelle, Zaborn had a son William Dawson Magee who was born on February 9, 1863. Young wife Martha died three days later on February 12, 1863. Knowing that Zaborn Davis Magee served in Co. A, 3rd LA Cavalry, C.S.A. (the Confederate States Army) beginning May 1, 1862, until May 10, 1865, I pondered the circumstances, wondering if Martha gave birth and died alone. William Dawson Magee married Lura Kisiah Williams. Zaborn and wife Lenore "Nora" Wascom had the following children: Oscar Eugene Magee, who married Cora Evelyn Blackwell; Florence Linea Magee, who married Robert Barnes, first, and Steve Ellis Magee, second; and Hosea Ernest Magee, who married Alice Bernice Creel.
Dr. Hosea Lafayette Magee (1846-1912) married Frances Ellen Flowers on January 18, 1883. But well before that, as a teenager, Hosea enlisted with the Confederate States Army. He served with Co. A, 9th BN LA Cavalry which became Co. A, 3rd LA Inf. before transferring to Co. B, 4th BN LA Inf. which became Co. F, Pelican Regt. LA Inf. (according to online posting by Jim Huffman). He became a prisoner of war before he was paroled on May 10, 1865, at Meridian, Mississippi. Studying dentistry both at the New Orleans College of Dentistry and later Vanderbilt University, Hosea was a dentist in both Washington and St. Helena Parishes before he relocated to Smithdale, Mississippi in the early 1880s, presumably around the time of his marriage to Frances Ellen Flowers. The couple had the following children: Hosea Frank Magee, who married Jim Dye Hailey; Mamie Ruth Magee, who married Dr. Henry Lewis Carruth; Dr. Henry Lafayette Magee (also a dentist), who married Emily Vallie Holmes; and Ephraim Flowers Magee, who married Olive Davis.
