Washington Parish football teams have started their spring practices and they will conclude with an inter-squad scrimmage with various opponents. The area coaches were asked what they are trying to accomplish during the spring period and scrimmage. Below are their responses and scrimmage dates.
"The obvious answer is to avoid injury. The reality is we are trying to find depth at all positions. We have many returning players and starters so building depth as we continue to rebuild the program is the next step in the process."
--- Franklinton head coach Nick Saltaformaggio. The Demons will scrimmage Newman on the road on May 16th at 5:30pm.
"We are returning a strong core of players from last years team. We do have a few new faces that are being asked to step up at the wing positions. We are looking to place an emphasis on getting those inexperienced backs ready for the upcoming season. On the defensive side of the ball a few players will be changing positions and we hope to settle them in their new spots. Copiah is a really great 5A program, they will certainly test our kids which will help us to get them game ready."
----Bowling Green head coach Jason Johnson. The Bucs will play Copiah Academy at Southwest Community College on May 9 at 4pm.
"The number one thing we are looking to do is get our quarterback in rhythm with our receivers. We have a new quarterback that's really talented, we just have to get him and our wide receivers on the same page. Our offensive line needs to start to gel. We have a couple of new starters there. Defensively we need to develop a little more depth and we have a couple kids competing for positions at linebacker and safety."
--- Pine head coach Bradley Seal. The Pine Raiders will scrimmage the St Helena Hawks on May 16 at 6:30 at home.
"We are trying to get more physical up front on both sides of the ball. Blocking and tackling wins football games. We need to get better at both. The two kids that carried the ball the most both graduated so we are looking to fill those carries. Josh Fox is stepping in at quarterback. He's a sophomore but has been starting on defense since he was an eight grader. He's a hard worker with a strong arm. He just needs some experience and getting that in the spring would be good for him. We need to fill in a few holds at linebacker on defense so hopefully a few kids step up there as well."
--- Varnado head coach Adam Brumfield. The Wildcats will scrimmage Springfield and Central Private at Springfield on May 15 at 6pm.
"Our goal for the spring is to get all of our guys a ton of reps. We have some questions that need to be answered on the depth chart. This will be a great measuring stick for us on where we are as a football team heading into the summer."
---- Central Private head coach Cole Holden. The Redhawks will scrimmage Springfield and Varnado at Springfield on May 15 at 6pm.
•The Bens Ford Eagles are scrimmaging Discovery Christian and Hillcrest Christian at Hillcrest Christian in Jackson, MS.
•Pearl River will scrimmage Bay High on May 9, junior varsity at 5:30 and varsity at 7pm.
•Amite will host Loranger, Salmen and South Plaquemines in a scrimmage on May 16 at 6pm.
•The Sumner Cowboys will play Scott Central on May 15 at 3pm at Co-Lin Junior College.
