Game of the Week - Varnado (0-0) at Slaughter (0-0) Slaughter was a solid playoff team last season and they return their quarterback who passed for over 1000 yards. The Wildcats return almost everyone from last season and are looking to use that experience for a good season. Slaughter soundly defeated the Wildcats last season but Varnado is much improved.
Should be a good one.
Notes and Quotes
"I thought we really competed well. We have some protection issues in our kicking game that we need to correct, but overall, I feel really great about our team. We played everyone who dressed and got out with any significant injuries. Next week counts so we are preparing our team for a difficult schedule against quality opponents. I'm excited about where we can be as a program."
---Nick Saltaformaggio, Franklinton coach
"This three game stretch against these 5A opponents has done just what we expected. While we are 0-3, it has battle tested and hardened our team. We played a really good team last night and carried them to the last fifty seconds. We led through three quarters and drove the field to tie it with two minutes left. We played a pretty clean game. No turnovers and very few penalties. Our defense held a really good team and quarterback down and made things difficult for them to move the ball. We have a couple of non division games and then we begin district lay. I saw our team turn the corner last night and am excited to lead them into the critical part of our season."
---Jason Johnson, Bowling Green coach
"Offensively we played a little sloppy. We had three turnovers and we need to clean that up. I will say we were trying a few new things in the playbook and I put our offense outside of their comfort zone with some play calling. Defensively we rested a couple starters to see what some different players could do. Gary Brumfield took advantage with an interception on defense."
---Bradley Seal, Pine coach
"We played a really good first quarter on defense, offense and special teams to get a quick 18-0 lead. The second half was sloppy with too many penalties and dumb mistakes. We have to learn how to win and be winners while we are ahead. We play up in class against Slaughter next week who has been an eight win team the last few years. If we can play the way we did in the first quarter we will have a chance to win, but if we play the way we did the second quarter it will be a long night. Monday is Labor Day and we have a virtual day Tuesday which makes practice challenging for us. We control our own destiny. I'm anxious to see how our kids handle it!" --- Adam Brumfield, Varnado coach
"It started out in a shootout in the first half, the difference was we were able to get our two point conversions and WCCA struggled with that. In the second half we were able to get some big stops and extend our lead which took some life out of them. We just have to keep working, obviously we have to get better on defense."
--- Destin Pittman, Bens Ford coach
