Black History Month is a time to celebrate achievements of African Americans and to recognize their adversities, markers and milestones.
We are proud to celebrate Black History Month by honoring Mr. Hayward Partman who is the last black Korean Veteran that lives in Washington Parish. He is the oldest deacon at Mount Zion Church of Christ Holiness, 3rd district. Mr. Hayward Partman was married for 58 years to the late Mrs. Nellie Dyson Partman. Together they had 9 children, 5 boys and 4 girls. His oldest son is the pastor at Bethel Church of Christ Holiness USA, Elder Alvin C. Partman. Mr. Partman was the first African American custodian that had benefits, and the first African American telephone installment repairman to have benefits. He later retired from 37 years with a perfect attendance.
Mr. Hayward was also the first to win the best colored baby in the class presented at the Washington Parish Free Fair in 1932. Mr. Hayward is now 92 years young and in his spare time he loves to take care and feed his cows and feed his fish twice a week in his pond behind his home. He likes to chop his own wood which he used to do by hand until his kids realized they could purchase him a wood splitter and so they did.
I would like to thank Mr. Partman for allowing me to write about his sacrifices, hard work and dedication as well as his achievements throughout his lifetime. We honor you this month, God bless you.
