Greetings to all! December is always a very busy month and maybe January will be a bit less busy. The students went back to school January 9th, having nineteen days out for the holiday break.
The Christmas program at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church was presented by the children and youth on Sunday night, December 18th. Following the program a variety of holiday goodies was enjoyed by all held in the church fellowship hall. They all did a super job.
Remembering my Son
William Allen "Bill" Alford was my first born, a healthy baby boy, born on January 19th. 1961 at Tylertown hospital to proud parents, Loyd and Nell Alford of Mt. Hermon. At a very young age, he could recite the Pledge of Allegiance, which he learned watching Romper Room on T.V. He was active in 4-H Club and Future Farmers of America. He enjoyed showing his dairy animals at Achievement Day and at the fair; always winning ribbons.
During revival service at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Bill and I were saved the summer of 1969. We were baptized in Silver Creek by Bro. Louie Tate who was our pastor. Preaching the revival services was Rev. Bill Allen. Bill enjoyed going to Sunday School, learning about Jesus.
As a teenager he had part-time jobs milking cows for Mr. Ad Burris and Mr. Wayne Brumfield, who were great employers.
Bill was a member of the MHS Yellow Jackets boys basketball team, where he served as manager. The coach was Mr. W.C. Cook.
I sure do miss his phone calls every week; talking about what we were cooking, many of the times the kids would come over on the weekends to visit. One day he called me to get advice on making gravy. Later when I asked him how it turned out - well his remarks were mom I must have put too much flour, because I had gravy everywhere, it just kept over flowing the skillet.
He was a kind hearted, hard worker and a concerned dad who loved his family and children very much. He enjoyed cooking, watching western movies, one being the "Virginian", and watching ball games on T.V. He kept in touch with long time friend, Jennifer Bankston Dillon. He also kept in touch with his cousin, Rebekah Nickel who lived near him in Walker. I still have the call on the answering machine wishing me a Happy Birthday. I find myself listening to it frequently.
The last time I talked wit him was the weekend before he died. He was found dead by his son Chris, at home sitting in his favorite chair on October 28th and it was said he died of a natural cause. During our last phone call he never said anything about being sick, just being tired.
I sure do miss him. It still doesn't seem real that he is gone. It happened so suddenly. It was truely a blessing that he didn't suffer. It was his time and the Lord called him home. Happy Birthday to you Bill. I love you with all my heart. You will always have a special place in my heart. Rest In Peace.
