Colossians 1:9-10
"For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God," Colossians 1:9-10. One of our prayers for ourselves and for others should be to increase in the knowledge of God according to the Scriptures. We have to add "according to the Scriptures" because there are so many non-biblical views of God which are readily accepted. It seems to be real easy for someone to say who God is and who He is not, or what God would or would not do. If our view of God does not come from the Scriptures in context, then we have a wrong view of God. A wrong view of God will cause us to attribute things to God that He does not do and will cause us to not attribute things to God that He does do. The Christians desire should be to know the true and living God revealed to us by the Scriptures. Lord willing today we will look at the biblical fact that God is Omniscient.
"God is omniscient. He knows everything: everything possible, everything actual; all events and all creatures, of the past, the present, and the future. He is perfectly acquainted with every detail in the life of every being in heaven, in earth, and in hell. "He knoweth what is in the darkness" (Dan. 2:22). Nothing escapes his notice, nothing can be hidden from him, nothing is forgotten by him. Well may we say with the Psalmist, "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it" (Psalm 139:6). His knowledge is perfect. He never errs, never changes, never overlooks anything. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do" (Hebrews 4:13). Yes, such is the God with whom "we have to do"!" A.W. Pink.
Do we ever meditate on this attribute of God? It should give us great comfort knowing our God is all knowing. In certain situations this truth is very comforting, but other times it is very convicting. "O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it," Psalm 139:1-6. As our love for God increases, we want to please Him, not offend Him. These verses are extremely helpful for all who want to grow in holiness. "And the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and said unto me, Speak; Thus saith the LORD; Thus have ye said, O house of Israel: for I know the things that come into your mind, every one of them," Ezekiel 11:5. This is a sobering verse. When, for whatever reason, we are not able to verbally proclaim the goodness and love of God; and we are not able to proclaim our love for God and our need of deliverance etc. by Him, He knows those thoughts, every one of them. He also knows those thoughts that we wish He did not know, every one of them. We can hide our sins from others, but not from the Lord. "But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out," Numbers 32:23.
The omniscience of God is great comfort to those He has saved, but for those who are still lost in their sins, it will be great calamity. God doesn't miss anything, and He doesn't forget. Every thought, word, and deed is recorded and will one day be brought to light. You may think that you got away with it, but one day there will be a reckoning. Turn to Revelation 20:11-15. "And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works," Revelation 20:12. God does not overlook sin, nor does He forget over time. "And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness; now their own doings have beset them about; they are before my face," Hosea 7:2. "Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance," Psalm 90:8. Sin creates a debt against God, and it will be paid. For all whom the Lord has and will save, our sin debt was paid for by Jesus Christ on the cross, but for all who die lost, you will pay for your sins for eternity. No one is the exception to the rule, and God will not miss anyone. You may laugh and mock God today, but you will reap what you sow. I beg you to repent of your sins and trust the finished work of Jesus Christ to save your soul. Believe the gospel.
Mankind is drawn to speculations and assumptions about the future. God never speculates or assumes. We are app to forget the past, but God doesn't. "For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister," Hebrews 6:10. God knows why we do what we do. Some people do what they do to be seen of men to receive the praises of men. God knows. "And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men," Colossians 3:23.
God doesn't know all things because He looks ahead in time, no, He knows all things because He has decreed all things. God never learns anything, and He never forgets anything. The God of the Scriptures is not like us. "The infinite knowledge of God ought to fill us with amazement. How far exalted above the wisest man is the Lord! None of us knows what a day may bring forth, but all futurity is open to his omniscient gaze. The infinite knowledge of God ought to fill us with holy awe. Nothing we do, say, or even think, escapes the cognizance of him with whom we have to do: "The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good," (Proverbs 15:3)." A.W. Pink.
God knows everything about everyone, yet He still saves all who come to Him through the finished work of His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ. He saves us, and He loves us with a love that we can never be separated from. The God of the Bible is worthy to be worshipped. Please send questions and comments to richardsonbaptistchurch@gmail.com.
