Dan Foil, commissioner for the 22nd Judicial District Court and a longtime law enforcement and judicial presence in Washington Parish, passed away on January 18.
Foil, age 72, was a Franklinton native and a graduate of Franklinton High School.
After graduating from the LSU School of Law and becoming an attorney, he served the 22nd Judicial District as an assistant district attorney and as an investigator. He later was an investigator and then chief criminal deputy for the Washington Parish Sheriff’s office, serving under Sheriffs Duane Blair, Scott Blair, and Aubrey Jones. He also served as an instructor at the Slidell Regional Police Academy.
Since 2009, Foil had been commissioner for the 22nd Judicial District, holding arraignments and setting bond amounts for arrested individuals.
The judges of the 22nd Judicial District said, in a joint statement: “We are fortunate to have had Commissioner Foil’s service and friendship for so many years. He touched our lives and community with his light, wisdom, discernment, and sense of humor. Dan’s life was dedicated to his family and to public service in our judicial district. He will be dearly missed by all.”
In addition, Foil also was the magistrate for the Franklinton Municipal Court.
Franklinton Mayor Darwin Sharp expressed sorrow at the passing of Foil. “We lost a very good citizen who worked most of his life protecting and serving the public in multiple capacities. He will be greatly missed,” Sharp said.
Funeral services for Foil were set for Saturday, February 1, at EJ Fielding Funeral Home in Covington.
