According to Co-chairmen Ann Warner and Sara Nelson, art is blossoming locally as artists plan for the annual Washington Art Association Show and Sale, to be held Sunday, March 22 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the lovely home of Mrs. Nelson in Clifton. The show has been held there for many years and is easy to find.
Many years ago, Carl Thorp, a professional artist, moved to Franklinton. He started holding classes and many students started learning to paint with oils. Some had previous lessons in school and continued to advance. This eventually led to the enlargement of the parish fair art show and the organization of the Washington (Parish) Art Association.
As the years have passed, some of these students have become great artists and teachers, so painters are still learning from really talented art teachers.
Before his death, Carl Thorp said he had seen more talented people in Washington Parish than he had experienced in any other place…and he had been many other places in his long career as a professional artist and teacher. His local teaching really started this big local art move.
One teacher in Franklinton is Ann Warner, who studied early with Carl Thorp, and has developed into a talented artist and teacher. She has studied with noted artists all over the world. It is her pleasure to pass along to her students the things she has learned. She puts a much work into the show each year.
A lot of work goes into this free show and what a beautiful afternoon it can be as people come and visit, view the art and refreshments and enjoy a really wonderful Sunday afternoon. Other art will also be shown besides paintings. There are great wood artists and others also in various media.
Various members are in charge of refreshments. Everyone is invited to attend. There is no charge for a fun afternoon of viewing local art.
