The Franklinton Demons football team traveled to Kentwood for a pre-season scrimmage with the Kentwood Kangaroos last week. There were periods of each team running a series of plays before the scrimmage ended with a live twelve minute period.
Kentwood scored on a long play in the first set of plays before the Demons shut them out in the next series. The Demons offense moved the ball to the Kentwood one yard line before turning the ball over on downs there. In the final series of plays the Kangaroos scored on a five yard pass.
The Demons then had their turn and senior quarterback Jacob Crain ran in a ten yard touchdown to even the score. With a few plays remaining the Demons scored again as Crain hit DaMikies McClain for a five yard reception to put the Demons ahead two scores to one for Kentwood.
During the live portion of the scrimmage the Kangaroos won the coin toss and went on offense first but the Demons defense forced a punt. The Demons took over at their own 33 yard line and moved steadily down the field before Crain again hit McClain, this time for a 40 yard touchdown.
The Kangaroos started off on their own 30 in what would be the final possession of the live portion of the scrimmage. They put together a solid drive that ended with the Demons holding them out of the endzone as time expired, giving the Demons a "win" in the live portion of the scrimmage 7-0 and a "win" overall in the scrimmage between the varsity squads, three scores to one.
Coach Nick Saltaformaggio was mostly pleased with his team's performance. "I thought we played well against an extremely talented football team. We moved the ball effectively in the run game and our returning players performed well. Defensively we gave up some explosive plays on missed assignments, but settled down. I felt like we played extremely well in the twelve minute timed quarter. I'm excited about this team and the opportunities that lie ahead."
The Demons will be in action this Friday as they take on the Mandeville Skippers on the road at Mandeville as part of the Skippers Jamboree.
