The Franklinton Demons football team participated in a spring scrimmage against the Hammond Tornadoes last Thursday in Hammond.
The scrimmage began with each team running a set number of plays with the Demons going first. Senior quarterback Jacob Crain led them on a nine play touchdown drive that was capped off with a one yard run by Jayden Burkhalter. Gabe Ezell added the extra point.
The Demons did not allow the Tornadoes to score in their set of plays as Chakyn McClain intercepted a pass. The Demons also could not score on their next set of plays and J.W. Magee intercepted a pass to end the Tornadoes set of plays.
The teams then each had a series of first and goal from the twenty yard line. The Demons moved to the six yard line but couldn't push it in on their four plays. The Tornadoes scored on fourth and goal from the twenty on a desperation pass into the endzone.
In the game-like portion of the scrimmage the Demons fumbled on one drive, had a pass intercepted and punted. The Tornadoes got their run game in gear and scored on each of their three possessions.
Jacob Crain was 14 of 22 passing for 136 yards with an interception. DaMikies McClain caught 8 passes for 81 yards. Ricardo Burris caught two for 35 yards, Jayden Burkhalter caught 3 for 16 yards and Dalton Freeman one for 5 yards.
Coach Saltaformaggio saw the youth in his team but also sees the upside. "We have a lot of growing to do. We have the players to be excellent again. Our youth on the offensive line showed that last night. The summer will be very important for us."
The Demons will go through summer conditioning and weight lifting as well as participate with other teams in seven on seven competition before fall practice begins in August.
