A renewal millage being sought for Fire District 1 is a straight up renewal and not an increase.
District 1 board member John Seal said an August 18 public meeting to be held at the district fire station on Highway 25 will be for the board to vote to put the renewal on the ballot.
Previous millage proposals in the district have been rejected by voters, but Seal said because the upcoming proposed 12.33 millage is strictly a renewal and nothing more, people he has talked to have said they will support it.
Several residents of the district contacted The Era-Leader with concerns that an increased millage was to be proposed, but Seal made it clear that only a renewal is being considered.
“It’s a straight up renewal,” he said.
The August 18 public meeting at the fire station is open to everyone. It begins at 7 p.m. The station is located at 17311 Highway 25.
Fire Protection District 1 encompasses a large territory in the southwestern corner of the parish, to the east of the Bogue Chitto River.
