Washington Parish Sheriff's deputies were searching an old gravel pit in the Enon area Tuesday afternoon for the body of a man believed to have drowned.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the unidentified man grabbed and missed a kayak and then sank below the surface of the water. He did not surface and was not seen again.
911 was called Tuesday shortly after noon and deputies and other first responders were dispatched to the old gravel pit. It was initially hoped that the man could be found and resuscitated, but as time went by the emergency response tragically became a recovery effort. Searchers on the scene were equipped with a sonar boat and diving gear.
The gravel pit is located not far from Enon Elementary School. It is off of Holden's Run Road, a gated road that turns off of Highway 16 just to the east of the school.
