2015 Franklinton High graduate P.J. Burkhalter has been appointed as an assistant football coach at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. His appointment has been in the works for several weeks and it was officially announced by the Ragin’ Cajuns this week.
At ULL, Burkhalter will be the assistant offensive line coach.
Burkhalter played for Coach Shane Smith at Franklinton High, where he was an outstanding lineman for his entire high school career. Burkhalter went on to play at Nicholls State University, where he had one of the most decorated careers in the Colonel’s football history. He collected numerous All-American and player of the year awards in his five seasons as a Nicholls offensive lineman. In addition to being named Southland Conference Lineman of the Year three times, Burkhalter received a total of 16 All-American honors in his final three campaigns. He was a three-time All-Southland First Team selection as was also regarded as one of the top players in the state, earning All-Louisiana three times.
Burkhalter returned to Nicholls as offensive line coach, where he has been working until being tapped by ULL for the Ragin’ Cajuns coaching staff.
Smith, who coached Burkhalter for his entire FHS career, said he is pleased that his former star lineman is now coaching at the college level.
“Universities want coaches who can sit in the living room with prospective athletes and parents,” said Smith. “They want guys who represent their universities with class. PJ is that. He carries himself with class and has a great presence. He is smart, consistent and a great teacher of offensive line technique. His ability to communicate with the players is also a gift he has. He will continue to progress in the profession.”
