Franklinton Primary School and Franklinton Head Start were placed on lockdown this morning (Tuesday, May 18) due to gunfire several blocks away from the two schools.
The gunfire occurred on Hilltop Drive and a heavy law enforcement presence was in the area following the shooting. Officers identified suspects in the shooting. Apparently the suspects fled the scene in vehicles and they are now being sought by Franklinton police and Washington Parish Sheriff's deputies.
Officials stressed that the shooting was not related to either of the schools in any way. The lockdown occurred as a safety precaution. The lockdown was canceled after law enforcement was completely satisfied that the suspects had fled from the area and no threat existed to the two schools.
As of noon today, law enforcement officers remained in the area of the two schools as a precaution while the suspects were being sought.
Because law enforcement now has the identities of the suspects, it is likely they will be arrested.
