A Franklinton woman has been charged with financial irregularities at the local educators credit union.
Sharon Smith, age 61, has been charged by the Franklinton Police Department with bank fraud. The alleged irregularities occurred while she was working at the Washington Educational Association Federal Credit Union on 11th Avenue in Franklinton.
According to investigators, credit union members made payments and deposits that were credited to the accounts of the members but then were not deposited into the local bank where the credit union has its operating account.
The Franklinton Police Department was notified of the irregularities on September 8. A lengthy investigation then took place. Mrs. Smith was arrested and charged with one count of bank fraud earlier this week. After being booked at the Washington Parish Jail she posted bond and was released.
She is no longer employed at the credit union. The alleged irregularities occurred at the credit union and not at the local bank where the credit union has its operating account.
The Franklinton Police Department stressed that all persons are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
