The Bowling Green Buccaneers came up just short Friday night in a thrilling matchup, falling 16-17 to the Brookhaven Academy Cougars at W.E. Buck Hellen Stadium. The loss moves the Buccaneers to 0-4 in the season, though each defeat has come against strong MAIS 4A opponents.
Brookhaven Academy Cougars won the toss and deferred, giving the Buccaneers the opening possession. After an early stop by the Cougar defense, a roughing-the-punter penalty gave Bowling Green new life, but the Bucs couldn't capitalize. The Buccaneer defense came out strong on Brookhaven's first series, forcing a three-and-out. On the next series of plays, Buccaneer quarterback Kerston Diddon connected with Ryn Rivernbark for what appeared to be a touchdown, but a holding call erased the score as the first quarter ended in a 0-0 deadlock.
The second quarter opened with a Cougar interception, but Bowling Green's defense held firm. Rivernbark returned the Cougars' punt to the Brookhaven 28-yard line, setting up the Bucs with excellent field position. Behind strong runs by Nathan Pylant and Diddon, Rivernbark finished the drive with a touchdown run. Alex Brock's extra point made it 7-0.
Kolt Killingsworth then came up big with an interception in the end zone to halt Brookhaven's next drive. Both teams traded punts, but late in the half, costly Buccaneer penalties extended a Cougar drive. With just 38 seconds left before halftime, Brookhaven punched in a score to tie the game 7-7.
The second half opened with tension as Bowling Green recovered an onside kick, only to see a holding call negate the play. Brookhaven took possession but was driven backward by the Buccaneer defense, forced to punt from its own 9-yard line on fourth-and-45. Buccaneers drive to the 28-yard line of the Cougars, but penalties stalled the Bucs again forcing a punt. Though Bowling Green controlled the clock in the third quarter, neither team could break the tie.
Early in the fourth quarter, Rivernbark returned a punt to the 1-yard line. Diddon scored on a quarterback sneak, giving the Bucs a 13-7 lead, though a high snap disrupted the PAT attempt. The Buccaneer defense forced another punt, but a fumble on the next drive allowed Brookhaven to score and take a 14-13 lead with 3:46 remaining.
Bowling Green answered with determination. Rivenbark's kickoff return set up the offense near midfield. Diddon ripped off a first-down run, then connected with Pylant on a screen pass to keep the chains moving. A Cougar interception was wiped out by a personal foul, advancing the Bucs to the 20-yard line. Though a wide-open pass to Killingsworth in the end zone fell incomplete, unable to finish the drive in the red zone, Bowling Green turned to its special teams. Kicker Alex Brock delivered under pressure, drilling a 35-yard field goal to put the Buccaneers ahead 16-14 with 1:54 remaining in the game.
Brookhaven had one final possession. The Cougars opened the drive at their own 28 and quickly moved the chains with a pair of completions, aided by a facemask penalty that advanced the ball to the 44. The Buccaneers responded with a sack, but a long completion moved Brookhaven to the 17. After an incompletion, a short rush, and another sack, the Cougars faced fourth-and-6 at the 11-yard line with 18 seconds remaining. The Brookhaven kicker split the uprights for the game-winning 30-yard field goal, sealing a 17-16 victory.
Penalties proved costly for the Buccaneers, who were flagged 18 times for 150 yards. Despite the miscues, the defense turned in a gritty performance, holding the Cougars’ rushing attack to just 30 yards. Landon Boyd led the defensive effort with two solo tackles, a sack, and nine assists, while Marcus Barnett and Jesse Gaines provided key support throughout the night.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, the faithful green and gold showed pride in the Buccaneers' effort. Head Coach Dean King praised his team, saying, "Super proud of this team!!! They gave everything they had and battled for 4 quarters against another solid 4A opponent. These guys are getting better and show no quit!!! We must keep being positive, working, and good is going to come soon with the group. I am proud of them!"
Bowling Green will return home to W.E. Buck Hellen Stadium on Friday, September 19, to host Parklane Academy in another tough MAIS 4A contest, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
