John Delmer Stevens, age 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Baton Rouge on Tuesday morning July 7, 2026. He was a native and longtime resident of Franklinton before making his home in Baton Rouge. John will be remembered as a man of deep faith, unwavering integrity and quiet strength whose life was defined by his love of God, his family, his friends and the outdoors. John was a faithful member of Sunlight Baptist Church, where he served for many years as head deacon, and truly loved his church family. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star.
John dedicated his entire working career to one company, Southern Natural Gas. Beginning in an entry-level position, then eventually advancing to supervise several different stations throughout the southern states, his loyalty and strong work ethic were evident in everything he did. When he wasn’t working, John could almost always be found outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing and especially hand-grabbing catfish. Some of his happiest days were spent hosting fish fries for family and friends. He also enjoyed woodworking, tending his garden and simply spending time outside.
John and his wife of 67 years, Dolores, shared a wonderful life together. They loved camping and spending time with their close-knit group of friends. One of his greatest blessings was being a grandfather. He treasured every moment with his grandsons and took great pride in teaching them to hunt, fish and appreciate the outdoors, passing along the traditions and values that meant so much to him. Above all else, John loved his family. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, kindness, generosity and hard work that will continue to live on in those who knew and loved him. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends.
He is survived by a daughter and son in law Diane and Ben Mercier of Baton Rouge; his grandsons and spouses, Jeremy and Katy Mercier, Rusty and Karli Stevens, sister Emma Lou Gill, brothers in law and sisters in law Arthur and Voncille Stevens, Roy and Bobbie Stevens, brother in law Johnnie McClendon and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and cherished friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years Dolores McClendon Stevens, son William David Stevens, parents Lawson Stevens and Elva Lee Lott Stevens, brother Larry Stevens, father in law W.R. McClendon, mother in law and father in law Grace and Bolden Burch and several brothers in law and sisters in law.
Visitation will be at Sunlight Baptist Church (18184 Sunlight Road, Franklinton) on Saturday July 11th from 10:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 am with Rev. Leroy McElveen officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
