Editor, The Era-Leader:
Recently, I’ve read comments on social media by many people asking for help. Mommas who need formula and baby food. Parents who need groceries to feed their families. Older siblings going without supper so their younger siblings can eat. Students needing uniforms and school supplies because their families cannot afford to buy them.
In times past, occasionally I would hear of an elderly person needing help with the electric bill. Now adults of all ages need help with the electric bill. Organizations and programs that are designed to help those in need are not able to, or just pick and choose who they want to help. More and more people depend on food banks.
We, in Washington Parish, see very few homeless people compared to those in big cities, but more and more people are standing at intersections, holding signs, asking for help. I know of only one person in Franklinton who does this on a regular bases. It takes a lot of humility to ask for help but people are doing it because they have no choice.
It’s no secret that we Americans have veterans who are homeless or don’t get the medical care they need.
It’s no secret that grocery prices are unreasonable and paychecks are too small.
Yet there are Americans who have turned a blind eye at our politicians. To publicly (referring to a letter to the editor in the newspaper a few weeks ago) brag on a guy who can’t speak coherently and correctly or walk up a flight of stairs, who disregards the condition of our country and sends millions of dollars to Ukraine and other countries, while there are American babies who are crying because they are hungry! Shame on you!
Put America first!
