Washington Parish President, Richard N. Thomas, Jr., announced today that since 2015, the Washington Parish Government has received over $4,000,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Funds. "The Washington Parish Government has previously used Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for local matching funds for Hurricane Isaac and the Floods of 2016 disaster recovery costs and related hazard mitigation construction projects; Varnado Water District Well Project; Hackley Street Improvement Project; Bogue Lusa Water District Projects and FEMA Hazard Mitigation projects providing a cost share to assist low to moderate income households in elevating homes that had experienced flooding repeatedly. The homes were elevated to at least one foot above the base flood elevation to help eliminate future damages and ensure the health and safety risk to homeowners and potential first responders; all which have been areas in our Parish that were in dire need of these projects.
The CDBG Program has provided over 200 construction related jobs for the above projects in the past five years. Funds received from the CDBG Program, in excess of four million dollars ($4,000,000), were spent on public improvements, as mentioned above, in Washington Parish.
As Washington Parish President, I wanted to take this opportunity to explain the importance of the CDBG-funded activities which have greatly improved the quality of life in our community and in the lives of our Washington Parish citizens."
The CDBG Program has been funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Louisiana Division of Administration, Office of Community Development, administers the program for the State.
