The Bowling Green Buccaneers showcased their all-around strength, overpowering the St. Aloysius Flashes 34-6 last Friday to advance to the MAIS District 4A semi-finals. This victory highlighted the Bucs' balanced attack and solid defense, allowing them to control the game from start to finish.
Bowling Green opened strong, using a combination of passing and rushing on their first drive, which ended with a touchdown pass from quarterback Maddox Magee to Rayden Rayborn. Alex Brock's successful PAT (100th career kicking point) gave the Bucs an early 7-0 lead. On the Flashes' first drive, senior Preston Jarrell came through with an interception, setting up another scoring opportunity. Rayborn struck again with a touchdown, though the PAT missed, extending the lead to 13-0. The Buccaneers' defense held steady, forcing a punt on the Flashes' second possession. With effective runs from Jessie Gaines and Bubby Bryant, the Bucs continued their momentum, capping the drive with a touchdown pass to Tucker Pittman. Rayborn added a two-point conversion, closing the first quarter with a 21-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Flashes' punt plus penalty pinned the Bucs back at their own half-yard line, but Bowling Green responded with an impressive 99.5-yard drive, topped off by a Bryant touchdown run and a successful PAT, pushing the lead to 28-0. Both teams exchanged punts before halftime, with the Bucs maintaining their commanding lead.
The Flashes adjusted in the second half and managed to score on their opening drive, though the PAT was unsuccessful, bringing the score to 28-6. The Buccaneers answered with a strong drive, but they were stopped just shy of the end zone, turning the ball over on downs at the Flashes' 11-yard line. After forcing another St. Aloysius punt, the Bucs struck again in the fourth quarter. Magee showcased his versatility with a quarterback run to the end zone, securing the Bucs' final touchdown for a 34-6 lead, despite a bad snap that halted the PAT. The Buccaneers' defense closed out the game by forcing a turnover on downs on the Flashes' last drive.
Rayborn led the rushing efforts with 5 carries for 68 yards, followed by Bryant with 6 carries for 52 yards, contributing to the team's 390 rushing yards. Magee completed 7 of 10 passes for 132 yards and two touchdowns, and he added a rushing touchdown. On defense, Cam Seal and Bryce Graham recorded sacks, while Preston Jarrell, Russell Wilson, Zeke Burford, and Trey Champagne excelled in pass coverage. J.P. Brumfield and Brody Estave led the team in tackles, anchoring a defensive effort that kept the Flashes in check.
Coach Phill Junkins said, "Our young men played well in all phases of the game. Over 500 yards of offense is a testament to the play of our offensive line. We will work to correct our mistakes and prepare for a very good Wayne Academy team. We look forward to having a good fan base for this week's game."
Bowling Green will host the sixth-seeded Wayne Academy in the semi-finals at W.E. "Buck" Hellen Stadium in Franklinton. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. this Friday, November 15.
