The Bowling Green Buccaneers delivered a commanding 52-21 victory over Central Hinds of Bolton, Mississippi, on Friday night, bringing their season record to 2-3. After a challenging start to the 2024 season, the Buccaneers seem to have found their rhythm just in time for the start of district play.
The Buccaneers wasted no time making their presence known. Central Hinds attempted an onside kick in a bid to regain possession on the opening kickoff, but Beau Brown was quick to pounce, securing the ball for the Buccaneers and keeping the Cougars at bay.
Quarterback Maddox Magee next orchestrated a strong offensive series. Magee capped the drive with a pinpoint pass to Zeke Burford for a touchdown. Alex Brock's successful extra point gave the Buccaneers an early 7-0 lead.
Central Hinds, on their first possession, was forced to punt after a stifling defensive stand by the Buccaneers. However, the Cougars' defense responded in kind, forcing Buccaneers' punter Ryn Rivenbark to launch a 43-yard punt on their next drive. Central Hinds then made a quick statement with a 60-yard run, leading to a touchdown. The Cougars' extra point leveled the score at 7-7.
Bowling Green answered back quickly, thanks to an electric 60-yard kickoff return by Rayden Rayborn, who brought the ball all the way to the Cougars' 12-yard line. Bubby Bryant followed with a powerful run, bringing the Bucs just short of the goal line before Magee punched it in himself, giving Bowling Green a 13-7 lead. Brock's leg added another PAT, making it 14-7. The Cougars were forced to punt again on their third possession, marking the end of the first quarter with Bowling Green in control.
The second quarter saw both teams trading punts early. Buccaneers' punter Ryn Rivenbark booted a solid 40-yarder, pinning the Central Hinds Cougars deep in their own territory. The Cougars couldn't gain momentum and were forced to punt again. On the Buccaneers' fifth possession of the game, quarterback Maddox Magee found the end zone once more, extending Bowling Green's lead to 20-7. However, a bad snap prevented the Buccaneers from attempting the extra point, keeping the score at 20-7.
As the first half wound down, Bowling Green's defense made a pivotal play. With just 36 seconds remaining, Buccaneer lineman Leroy Bruce intercepted a pass, putting the Bucs in excellent field position. Magee capitalized on the turnover, connecting with Tucker Pittman for a touchdown strike. The Buccaneers then successfully converted a two-point attempt, bringing the score to 28-7 as they headed into halftime.
Central Hinds came out strong in the second half, quickly narrowing the gap with an early touchdown, bringing the score to 28-13. After a successful PAT, the Cougars trailed 28-14.
The Buccaneers responded swiftly. Starting from their own 39-yard line after the kickoff, running back Bubby Bryant delivered an explosive run, advancing the ball to the Central Hinds 14-yard line before carrying it all the way into the end zone. With the extra point, Bowling Green extended their lead to 35-14.
The Cougars weren't finished yet. On their second possession of the third quarter, they struck back with a 68-yard touchdown pass. A successful PAT made it 35-21. However, the Buccaneers continued to dominate on the ground. On their second drive of the quarter, Nathan Pylant, Jesse Gaines, and Rayden Rayborn combined for a series of powerful rushes, with Rayborn capping it off with a touchdown. The successful PAT extended the lead to 42-21,
On Central Hinds' third possession, J.P. Brumfield delivered a big hit, dislodging the ball and forcing a fumble that was recovered by Buc Preston Jarrell. The Buccaneers capitalized on the turnover with a 50-yard pass from Maddox Magee to Rayborn, bringing the ball to the 11-yard line. Bubby Bryant finished the drive with a touchdown run, extending the lead to 49-21 after the successful PAT by Alex Brock, keeping Bowling Green firmly in control as they headed into the final quarter.
Leading the rushing attack was Bryant, with 81 yards on 8 carries, and Rayborn, who rushed for 53 yards on just 3 attempts. Defensively, J.P. Brumfield, Russell Wilson, and Cam Seal led the Buccaneers in tackles, keeping the Cougars' offense in check
In the fourth quarter, the Buccaneers turned to some key substitutes to close out the game. Nathan Pylant and Rhett Schilling made notable contributions, helping set up a 37-yard field goal by Alex Brock, which brought the final score to 52-21.
With this dominant performance, the Buccaneers head into district play with renewed confidence.
Coach Jason Johnson said, "We played hard and physical. About as good a game as we have played all year. With Wayne coming in for an important district game, we hope we are peaking at the right time. Offence, defense, and special teams all played well."
