For the second consecutive year, the Bowling Green Buccaneers fell just short of their championship dreams, suffering a 3-27 defeat at the hands of the defending and reigning champions, the Tri-County Rebels, in the 2024 MAIS Class 4A Championship game. Despite the loss, the Buccaneers' hard-fought journey earned them the title of MAIS Class 4A State Runner-Ups, a testament to their determination and resilience throughout the season.
The game opened with promise for the Buccaneers. After Tri-County won the coin toss and deferred to the second half, Bowling Green began their first drive at their own 38-yard line. A balanced attack featuring Nathan Pylant, Bubby Bryant, and Preston Jarrell, along with a critical first-down pass to Zeke Burford, moved the Buccaneers downfield. Ultimately, the drive stalled, and kicker Alex Brock delivered with a 39-yard field goal, giving Bowling Green an early 3-0 lead.
The Buccaneers' defense responded on the Rebels' first drive, forcing a punt after holding them at bay. Building on this momentum, Bowling Green orchestrated a grinding second drive that highlighted the rushing prowess of Jessie Gaines, Bubby Bryant, and Preston Jarrell. Quarterback Maddox Magee broke free on a spectacular 53-yard keeper, positioning the Buccaneers at Tri-County's 11-yard line. However, the Rebels' defense stiffened, forcing a fumble that Bowling Green managed to recover. A field goal attempt followed but missed the mark, keeping the score at 3-0.
On the Rebels' second possession, the Buccaneers' defense again stood strong, forcing another punt and giving the offense another opportunity to extend the lead. Starting at their own 21-yard line, the Buccaneers couldn't capitalize and were forced to punt.
Tri-County broke through on their third possession, connecting on a 40-yard touchdown pass to claim the lead. The point after was good, and the Rebels moved ahead 3-7 late in the second quarter. With 32 seconds left in the half, Bowling Green mounted a quick drive and attempted a 42-yard field goal as time expired, but the kick fell short, leaving the halftime score at 3-7 in favor of Tri-County.
As the second half began, the Rebels received the kickoff and started their drive at their own 35-yard line. A series of plays, including a long pass, brought them to the Buccaneers' 20-yard line. On a critical fourth-and-goal, Tri-County punched it in for a touchdown, extending the score to 3-14 after the successful PAT.
Bowling Green responded by controlling the clock in the third quarter. After Jessie Gaines' kickoff return to the 38-yard line, the Buccaneers leaned on their rushing game, with carries from Bubby Bryant, Jessie Gaines, and Preston Jarrell. However, the offense stalled once more, and Alex Brock's 42-yard field goal attempt fell short, leaving the score 3-14 as the third quarter ended.
Early in the fourth quarter, Tri-County struck again, this time on a 56-yard touchdown run. The PAT was good, making it 3-21. The Buccaneers' next possession ended abruptly when Tri-County intercepted a pass, setting up another Rebels' drive. The defending champions capitalized with another touchdown, though the PAT was missed, bringing the score to 3-27.
On their final possession, the Buccaneers fought valiantly but couldn't close the gap. A fourth-down pass to Zeke Burford at the Rebels' 34-yard line fell incomplete, and Tri-County took over on downs. With time winding down, the Rebels ran out the clock to secure their championship victory.
Coach Phil Junkins said, "We are incredibly proud of our young men and the accomplishments of making the state championship game. We were truly playing Iron man football this year and it caught up with us against a very talented and very deep Tri-County football team. Our kids left nothing on the field, and they deserved to be in that position playing for this championship. Unfortunately, it was not our night, but we are extremely proud of them. The Buccaneers have nothing to hang their heads about."
This season's success was fueled by an outstanding group of senior leaders who left their mark on the program both on and off the field. Key contributions came from Trey Champagne, Preston Jarrell, Russell Wilson, Tucker Pittman, Zeke Burford, Maddox Magee, Sawyer McCune, Cam Seal, Bubby Bryant, Leroy Bruce, Jude Rawls, JP Brumfield, Bryce Graham, Austin Bovia, and Brody Estave.
