In their final regular-season game, the Bowling Green Buccaneers fell to the Oak Forest Jackets 21-49, bringing their overall record to 6-4. Despite the loss, the Buccaneers secured the number two seed in the MAIS 4A playoff brackets as District 3 Champions. With an off week ahead, the Bucs will focus on refining their game as they prepare for the postseason.
"We had turnovers early and [they were] costly to our football team," said Head Coach Phill Junkins. "Without those, we would have gone into halftime 7 to 7. They were able to make adjustments in the second half that caused us trouble, and we weren't able to run the ball effectively. I think we got tired, and the score reflected that. We've got a couple of weeks off to get ourselves healthy, correct our mistakes, and prepare for a run at a state championship."
The game started with an early setback for Bowling Green, as their opening drive ended with an interception that Oak Forest quickly turned into a touchdown, making the score 0-7 just two minutes into the game. The Bucs struggled to gain momentum on their second drive and were forced to punt. After a turnover recovery on a Jackets' fumble, the Bucs were unable to capitalize, throwing another interception that Oak Forest returned for a touchdown, bringing the score to 0-14. The Bucs were forced to punt again to end the first quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, the Jackets extended their lead with another touchdown, making it 0-21. However, the Buccaneers responded in their fifth possession when quarterback Maddox Magee connected with Tucker Pittman for a 70-yard pass. The first half ended with a positive note for Bowling Green when Preston Jarrell intercepted a Jackets pass, stopping their drive.
In the second half, after a big sack by Cam Seal, Oak Forest broke away with a 73-yard touchdown run, extending their lead to 7-28. Bowling Green's next drive ended in a punt, but they caught a break when a turnover on the punt gave the Bucs the back the ball. Magee hit Rayborn again for a 46-yard pass, setting up an 11-yard touchdown pass to Zeke Burford. Brock's PAT was good, closing the gap to 14-28.
Oak Forest quickly answered with a 66-yard touchdown run, making it 14-35. On their third possession of the half, the Bucs were forced to punt again, and the Jackets capitalized by scoring once more, bringing the score to 14-42.
