The Bowling Green Buccaneers secured the MAIS 4A District 3 Championship title with an exhilarating overtime win against the Centreville Academy Tigers, prevailing 29-21 on the road. This victory boosts the Buccaneers' overall record to 6-3 and completes a perfect district season at 4-0, establishing Bowling Green as the number two seed entering the upcoming MAIS District 4 Championship playoffs.
The game began with a setback as Bowling Green fumbled on their opening drive, giving Centreville an early opportunity. The Tigers capitalized with a 34-yard touchdown pass, quickly putting the Buccaneers behind 0-7. Both teams' defenses then locked down the field for the next series of drives, with standout Buccaneer runs, including one from Bubby Bryant, ultimately cut short as the Bucs turned over on downs. Centreville struck again at the start of the second quarter, widening the gap to 0-14.
Despite the early deficit, Head Coach Phill Junkins praised the resilience of his players: "Our young men played the game of their lives Friday night. Their determination and desire to win overcame several setbacks, and they willed themselves to win! I am incredibly proud of the effort from the football team."
Bowling Green answered as senior Preston Jarrell hauled in a touchdown pass from Maddox Magee, with Alex Brock's PAT narrowing the score to 7-14. Just before halftime, a 30-yard pass to Rayden Rayborn set up Magee for a keeper into the end zone, tying the game at 14-14 as Brock's PAT was good. This evened up the score as the teams headed into halftime.
The second half turned into a defensive showdown. The Buccaneers' defense held tight against a prolonged Tigers drive that reached the 9-yard line, forcing a turnover on downs to end a scoreless third quarter. Early in the fourth, Centreville regained the lead with another touchdown, bringing the score to 14-21. However, on the ensuing kickoff, junior Rayden Rayborn electrified the Bucs' sidelines with a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Brock's PAT was good, leveling the score once again at 21-21.
Coach Junkins highlighted Rayborn's performance as pivotal, "Rayborn was outstanding, with well over 150 all-purpose yards, and his touchdown on the kickoff return was a huge momentum shift for our football team."
The Tigers had another chance late in regulation, but a would-be touchdown was nullified by a penalty, leading to a field goal attempt that went wide and pushed the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Buccaneers took possession first, with Rayborn breaking through for an 8-yard touchdown run. After a defensive offside call on the PAT attempt, the Bucs opted for a two-point conversion. Magee's keeper was successful, giving Bowling Green a 29-21 lead. The Tigers' overtime drive was stalled by an intentional grounding penalty on third down, leaving them with a long fourth-down attempt. A final pass was deflected and bobbled by Bowling Green's Zeke Buford, sealing the Bucs' victory.
Reflecting on the season's success and the strong support from his coaching staff, Coach Junkins noted, "Dean King, Hutch Gonzales, and Matt Magee have been amazing in preparing these young men week after week. They continue to work extremely hard to give the kids every chance to win." He added, "The seniors have done a tremendous job leading this football team and now have their focus on the playoffs and making a run for a state championship. We're going to get behind them and give them all the opportunities to do just that."
With a hard-fought district title win and an unbroken district record, the Buccaneers now look ahead to a non-district matchup this week in Amite against Oak Forest, using this momentum as they advance toward the MAIS championship rounds.
