Bowling Green traveled to Brookhaven Academy last Friday for the district opener for both teams.
The Cougars got on the scoreboard first following a Bowling Green punt. Starting on their own 35 yard line, Brookhaven drove 65 yards in five plays. The touchdown came on a 35 yard pass and a successful PAT put the home team ahead 7-0 early in the contest.
The Bucs turned the ball over two plays after the ensuing kickoff, but the BGS defense held and forced the Cougars to punt.
Bowling Green’s offense took over on the 13 yard line. Kyron Cowart gained 12 yards on the first play. Two plays later, Josiah Miller took a direct snap, broke through the Cougars line and ran 65 yards for a Buccaneers touchdown. Alex Brock converted the PAT and the game was tied at 7-7.
The Cougars recovered a short kickoff and took over at the BGS 47 yard line. Brookhaven used 6 plays before scoring again on a 10 yard quarterback run around the left side. The PAT missed wide left and the Cougars led 13-7 at the end of one quarter.
After a busy first quarter, the score remained the same until the final period although Bowling Green threatened in the third.
The Bucs moved inside the BA 5 yard line with a chance to tie or take the lead with five minutes left in the third. The Cougars defense stiffened and forced BGS to turn the ball over on downs.
In the fourth, the Cougars took over near midfield after forcing another turnover on downs. The drive ended with a 33 yard touchdown pass and the extra point gave Brookhaven a 20-7 lead with 6:03 remaining.
A BA 7 yard touchdown run after a BGS turnover capped off the scoring for the game. Brookhaven came away with a 28-7 district win.
