Bowling Green School’s Cassidy Spears has signed a scholarship to play softball for head coach Barry Roberts at Louisiana College. Roberts recruited Cassidy after she attended one of his softball camps and convinced her to sign on with his Louisiana College team.
Located in Pineville, Louisiana, the Christian school made an impact on Cassidy’s decision to attend it. “I’m looking forward to being able to continue my schooling at a place that is Christ centered,” she said. “My time as a student at Bowling Green has gone by fast. The environment at the school is like no other. I know that my teachers all want me to succeed.”
Cassidy was a starter on the Lady Bucs varsity team beginning in the eighth grade where she played 1st or 3rd base. She excelled on the field and captured numerous awards including first team All-District in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. Cassidy was selected District Offensive MVP from 2018 through 2021 and made the 2019 and 2020 All-MAIS fast pitch team. As a senior, she was named a member of the 2021 All-Star team.
In her career, Cassidy had a batting average of .470, a .545 on-base percentage, and a .741 slugging percentage. She had 3 triples, 43 doubles, 22 home runs, 134 RBI, 48 base on balls and scored 114 runs. She only struck out eight times; seven of those her freshman year. She holds the school record in every offensive category with the exception of triples. Her career fielding percentage of .946 came mostly from her third-base position.
Cassidy also thrived in the classroom and graduated with a 4.1 GPA. She plans to major in Nursing at Louisiana College.
“We will probably never have another player here come close to those offensive numbers, especially while I’m here” said BGS head softball coach David Hood Burris. Not only are those numbers eye-popping, but she knew how to do it in the clutch when it mattered most. She had some really big hits in pressure situations in late innings in really big playoff games for us. It’s been a pleasure to coach her for the last five years and I will miss her.”
“My time as a softball player at Bowling Green was very memorable,” she said. “Each year I had to live up to a new standard Coach Hood set for me. One thing Coach Hood has taught me is how to be a leader. He has taught me to be a leader since I began my softball career at BG.”
Basketball was another sport that Cassidy played until her freshman year when she decided to concentrate solely on softball. She had already been playing softball with a travel team in Mississippi known as ATAK since the age of 10. Coached by Greg Gatlin and Chad Johnson, the team was later renamed to Mississippi Elite Gatlin. She played with the same girls and coaches until this past year when she joined coach Brian Nelson’s Gulf Coast Firecrackers out of Pensacola, Florida.
Cassidy is the daughter of Chad and Katie Spears of Franklinton. She is the granddaughter of Murdock and Kira Brumfield and Lynn and Debbie Spears, also of Franklinton.
