An antique bookcase has been donated to the Varnado Store Museum. It is a gift from Mr. Richard Watts, a local attorney who has retired and is closing his office.
This bookcase has been positioned at the very front of the building. Made of solid wood, possibly oak or cherry, it features double glass doors with six shelves to be used to hold a myriad of books that have been donated to our museum thru the years. This lovely antique is more than 100 years old. The front façade has on the doors hand carvings including lion heads. All original, there are no reproductions or replacement parts.
The original owner of the piece was Mrs. Hallie Love, a teacher of Expression at Franklinton Elementary School. Her teaching focus was on leading her young charges to "expressionism" recitations. She was a city leader who founded the original chapter of the Franklinton Girl Scouts of America.
Some of the large items at the front of the store building have been re-arranged for better display and access.
Volunteers who helped bring the bookcase into the building include Don Folse, Miachel Thomas and Wayne McElveen. Also assisting in the process were Charlene Guidry, Terry Seal, Dianne Smith, Tama Blanchard and Katherine Haik.
Everyone is invited to come by to see what has been done to enhance the museum collection.
