It was a hot time at the Fairgrounds this past weekend, but despite the heat the 2024 Watermelon Festival was termed as a success, with plenty of participation from area residents and visitors.
A particular highlight of the Festival was the fireworks display on Saturday night. There was plenty of appreciation shown by attendees for the fireworks show, which was sponsored by the Town of Franklinton.
Shown above is the 82.4 pound Black Diamond watermelon grown by Daryl Burnthorn, which placed first in the heaviest watermelon contest. Burnthorn, of the Thomas area, is no stranger to growing award-winning watermelons. Last summer, his 220.45 pound Black Diamond officially broke a state record. Last summer he also had a Carolina Cross watermelon that topped the scales at 232.95 pounds.
Watermelon Festival organizers expressed their appreciation to everyone who attended the festival and also to the volunteers who worked hard to make it happen. After being absent for a long time, the revived Watermelon Festival has just finished its second year and it is definitely back!
