In the photo above, scaffolding can be seen surrounding the historic Franklinton Junior High School as work to remodel and update the building continues. The project includes major renovations inside the school, and shown in the photo is work that's taking place outside to waterproof the bricks on the 1938 building to protect against water and moisture.
Interim Parish School Superintendent Jennifer Thomas said the entire project is on track to be completed this summer.
“Faculty, staff, and students are absolutely thrilled with the larger classrooms and updated restrooms,” she said. “Also, staff and parents appreciate the added safety measures in the updated office and reception area. These needed refurbishments will definitely be appreciated for years to come.”
The building originally replaced the Franklinton High School that was destroyed by fire in February 1938.
Classes were held at the Fairgrounds until the new Late Gothic Revival-style building was ready. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.
When the present Franklinton High School on Section Line Road was built, the 1938 building became Franklinton Junior High School.
