Washington Parish deputy Sgt. John Herriing was seriously injured in a vehicle crash two weeks ago when a suspected impaired driver smashed into him on Highway 25 south of Franklinton.
Herrring suffered serious multiple injuries. Although he is improving, he needed blood donations and on Monday of this week his fellow deputies of the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office came through.
A Bloodmobile unit was parked at the Sheriff’s Office in Franklinton for much of the day on Monday, and many deputies and other concerned people stopped in to donate blood for Herring.
The blood donations are not just for Herring personally. They will also go into the blood bank and he will receive monetary credit for excess blood donated. The credit will be used to help cover the portion of his medical and recovery expenses that are not covered by insurance.
Herring was responding to a call of a vehicle being driven on the wrong side of the road Thursday night, May 23. As he approached the vehicle on the narrow bridge at the bottom of the steep hill south of Franklinton, it crashed into Hern’s Chevrolet Tahoe police cruiser, which was totaled.
O’Hern was rushed to the hospital with major injuries, including a shattered pelvis, a dislocated femur bone, and multiple cuts and bruises.
The driver of the vehicle that hit O’Hern’s patrol vehicle has been identified as Corey J Pellerin, age 42, of Madisonville. Pellerin is charged with driving while intoxicated (1st offense), driving left of the center/wrong side of highway, and vehicular injuring/negligent first degree. He was booked and then later released on a $40,000 bond.
