Franklinton resident Mike Phelps was one of three Louisiana Probation and Parole agents who have been awarded the Medal of Valor for their role in saving a co-worker.
As reported last fall in The Era-Leader, Phelps and two other agents rushed to the huge I-55 pile-up last October after learning that their co-worker was involved in the massive wreck.
Seven people were killed and more than 60 were injured at the huge accident scene, which was caused by dense fog.
Phelps and co-workers David Dean and Joseph Cotton raced at high speed from their Covington office to the wreck on I-55 to save fellow agent Robert Hall.
As a result of their very difficult effort in getting to the accident scene and then weaving through it on foot, they were able to extract Hall from his wrecked vehicle and get him medical assistance.
Now they have been awarded the Medal of Valor from the North American Association of Wardens and Superintendents.
