State Sen. Beth Mizell’s bill to require athletes from the elementary through college level to compete based on their sex at birth has been approved by the state House of Representatives.
It had earlier been approved by the state Senate.
The legislation is designed to ban transgender athletes from completing in accordance to their current gender identity. In example, an athlete who changes their gender from male to female would not be allowed to compete in women’s sports.
The legislation will next go to Gov. John Bel Edwards for either his signature or his veto. He vetoed a similar bill last year and he has said he hasn’t changed his position.
