The Washington Parish Council most recently met on Monday September 12. Preceding the regular meeting was a public hearing to obtain views on the community development needs of Washington Parish and to discuss the submission of an application for funding under the State of Louisiana FY 2023 Community Development Block Grant (LCDBG) Program.
The public hearing opened with Director of Finance Donna Graham explaining the block grant and how such funding had been used in recent years by parish government. The grant in past years emphasized sewage and water improvements but since other funding sources have addressed these areas, the 2023 grant will be earmarked for street improvements. Mrs. Graham explained that there is more than one target area for the grant and the money may also be used to build on previous projects.
One citizen spoke and expressed several ideas for improvements and possible programs for the parish; however, Mrs. Graham did note that the funds must be used for specified areas. This concluded the public hearing.
The agenda of the regular meeting included the appointment of two new members of the Board of Directors for Fire District No. 7. Ronald Pittman and Timothy Slocum will fill two vacancies that will occur on December 31.
Parish President Richard Thomas began his report with condolences to the family of Richard Watts, a local attorney who worked closely with parish government. He passed away on August 28. President Thomas also reported that on September 10 the parish's animal shelters held an adoption day. Washington Parish's shelter had three adoptions and Bogalusa had ten. He praised the shelters on their hard work and commitment to protecting displaced animals in the parish.
President Thomas also offered praise to the Tourism office for sponsoring football tosses at the parish schools this football season that have gift certificates to local eateries printed on the sides.
He also announced that October 8 the Franklinton Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring "Team Up to Clean Up." Finally, President Thomas reminded everyone that despite a rare hurricane season with few storms, stay weather alert and storm ready.
In final comments, Council member Rusty Fornea reminded everyone to be aware of school zones and the speed limits posted. If one is driving in a school zone, there are likely children present and speed limits in these areas are for their protection.
